Knowing the official air hockey game rules, as set by the United States Air Hockey Association, will add to the excitement of the game every time the puck glides across the air hockey game table, regardless if you are playing for fun or in a competition.
In some cases you may consider setting your own house rules, especially if you are playing for social fun. However, no matter what set of rules you use, be sure both players agree to the rules before facing off from across the air hockey game table.
The rules of playing air hockey are pretty straightforward and below is an interpretation of the rules to get you started. The basic rules, as set by the USAA are:
- A player can stand anywhere around the air hockey game table as long as he/she are on their side of the centerline. Standing past the centerline is not allowed.
- At any giving time only one puck can be in play.
- Players may only hold one air hockey mallet at a time and may only have one air hockey mallet on the playing surface.
- A “palming” foul can be called if any part of a player’s hand, arm, body, or clothing touches the puck.
- A player cannot strike the puck with the bottom surface of the mallet. Any other surface area of the mallet is acceptable.
- Players are not allowed to “top” the puck by lifting the mallet and placing it on top of the puck in an attempt to slow or stop it. This “topping” action is not allowed while the puck is on the air hockey game table nor before a serve or during a play. A player can use the mallet to bring an airborne puck to the table or send it towards the opponent’s goal is not considered topping regardless of which side or edge of the puck is contacted.
- In order for a player to make a goal, the puck must drop and remain in the goal for it to count. Player’s receive one point for each goal scored and the player scored upon received possession of the puck for the next serve.
- After a player is scored upon, that player has 10 seconds to place the puck back in play. The 10 seconds start as soon as the puck has completely fallen through the goal.
- A player may hand-serve the puck after they have been scored upon.
- Players have seven seconds to execute a shot that crosses the centerline. The seven seconds begin as soon as the puck enters the player’s side of the centerline. However, if the puck is in contact with any part of the centerline, it is fair game to both players.
- Each player is allowed one, 10 second, time-out during the game.
- A player may call a time-out only when the puck is in their possession or if the puck is not in play.
- The player requesting the time must make a clear indication to their opponent of the intent to take a time-out.
- The first player to score seven goals wins.
- Players change sides of the air hockey table after each game.
Playing an air hockey game is invigorating and fun regardless if you are a novice or professional. Having established rules of the game keep all the players on the same page and increases the level of good sportsmanship.
